Week 2 – September 2014 – Apple theme
The second week of September is behind us. We have started the Apple Theme. We learned that apples can be in different colours: red, green and yellow, they can taste sweet and sour. Apples can be soft or hard to bite. Next week we will learn more about the life cycle and the parts of the apple.
More about apple theme you can find in the Theme Section.
Kids learned the letter A. A is for apple, alligator, aeroplane, ant.
We made a from play-dough, and rolled small apples from it as well.
Maths activities:
Kids were introduced quantities 1-5 using Mortensen blocks and they associated them with numbers. We also started writing numbers in the sand. Numbers 1 and 2 at the beginning.
Our routine works very well. Kids got used to washing hands before lunch, helping to set up the table for lunch and clean after.
Sensorial:
Cylinder blocks
The knob encourages the use of the pincer grasp. This is when your child grips the knob between the thumb and the first two fingers. The development of the pincer grasp features prominently in the Montessori approach, as it prepares the hand very well to be able to hold and control a pencil later on.
Other activities:
Practical life, and puzzles.
